Elementary School | Lower and Upper Elementary

The Elementary School at Canadian Global School is designed to develop curious, engaged, and empowered students who are prepared for the challenges of a globalized world. Throughout this stage, students consolidate academic knowledge, develop social-emotional skills, and broaden their understanding of the world through a bilingual and internationally oriented educational experience.

With an active, student-centered approach, our curriculum integrates the requirements of the Brazilian National Common Curricular Base (BNCC) with leading practices from Canadian and international education. In an English immersion environment, students learn by doing, investigating, creating, and collaborating, developing independence, critical thinking, and the ability to solve real-world problems.

Bilingual education with a global perspective

Throughout Elementary School, students develop proficiency in Portuguese, English, and French, expanding their ability to communicate and their understanding of different cultures and perspectives.

The school experience combines academic learning, interdisciplinary projects, hands-on activities, educational technology, academic competitions, science fairs, and educational trips, making learning more meaningful and connected to the real world.

English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science are taught in English, while Portuguese Language, History, and Geography are taught in Portuguese. Students also take part in Physical Education, Music, Drama, Maker, and Visual Arts, enriching their holistic development.

Literacy: first in Portuguese, then in English

The Canadian Global School curriculum is aligned with the BNCC, Canadian educational frameworks, and internationally recognized programs. Students use learning resources in both Portuguese and English, conduct research in both languages, and develop academic skills that prepare them for both national and international challenges.

Reading plays a central role in our educational approach. Through strategies such as Guided Reading, Independent Reading, and the Home Reading Program, students develop reading fluency, comprehension, cultural knowledge, and critical thinking in both languages.

In the Lower Elementary years, literacy development is supported by the Balanced Literacy approach, integrating reading, writing, speaking, listening, and comprehension in a structured and personalized way that respects each student’s developmental journey.

International Baccalaureate (IB)

The Canadian Global School educational approach is further strengthened by the International Baccalaureate (IB), one of the world’s most recognized international education organizations, with programs offered by schools around the globe.

The IB promotes inquiry-based learning, critical thinking, and the development of ethical, reflective, and engaged global citizens committed to making a positive impact on society.

Our schools offer different stages of the IB pathway:

  • Brasília: Primary Years Programme (PYP) and Middle Years Programme (MYP);
  • Niterói: Primary Years Programme (PYP);
  • Belém: Candidate school for the Primary Years Programme (PYP).

This integration of the Brazilian curriculum, Canadian education, and international programs provides students with a strong academic foundation and prepares them for High School, the Dual Diploma, and admission to leading universities in Brazil and around the world.
